Ancient Art Concrete
"Concrete - Green Since the Romans"
" From the Earth to Your Home "
Our Concrete Countertops Are Environmentally Friendly to the local Austin, Texas Environment – Concrete Countertops are a green building material because they are:
Locally hand casted, by Local artists (making a living wage) from Locally available materials.
Whether we use the Buddy Rhodes Concrete Countertop Mix or an architect specified -Central Texas Concrete. Concrete is one of the greenest building materials available.
On countertops, Concrete is absolutely the greenest. See Concrete is Green: http://www.ecco.org/
Concrete's environmentally friendly features make it the building material of choice for sustainability....meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
The most widely used construction material on earth, concrete has the longest life span of any traditional building material, used to create structures that still stand after more than 2,000 years. * How much energy is wasted with the short life span of many construction materials – How much landfill space is used????? Concrete – It’s forever!
Concrete also supports recycling in that it can be made using by-products from manufacturing and power plants, reducing landfill needs. Its service life is measured in millennia, but when the end finally comes, concrete can be crushed and recycled as a high-quality aggregate for hundreds of applications. Concrete is also green in that it is manufactured in the Central Texas area.
Because we design our concrete needs for each specific project, there is very little waste. What little “mix” we do have left over is used to cast pieces of art and customer color samples for future use. And when a concrete element has served its purpose, the material can be crushed and recycled for other functions. Note: This would be unlikely on a countertop, because it will last forever if maintained properly.
Concrete is comprised of limestone (the most abundant mineral on earth and available locally) – Cement, (often made form Fly Ash which is a by product of manufacturing and power plants) and Aggregate (Fine sand, rock, recycled glass, recycled concrete, etc - All obtainable locally)
VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) concrete does not off-gas harmful chemicals
Granite and Marble: Exploited labor, huge environmental damage from the quarries themselves and most of it is imported, giving it a very large carbon footprint.
Vetrazzo: While manufactured Green, it has to be transported over hundreds of miles (in slabs). Upon arrival the slabs are fabricated, producing waste – just like granite)
Ice Stone (See Above)
Enviroglass (See Vetrazzo Above)
Corian – Full of VOC’s, High Resin Content - made primarily from nonrenewable resources: petrochemicals and aluminum trihydrate (ATH). It can’t be recycled. From DuPont Chemical Company - hmm…..
Silestone – while honorable in their environmental efforts, it’s still manufactured in Spain. A long way from Austin, Texas. How much energy is consumed bringing it here all the way from Spain?? It does have VOC’s and it has to be fabricated from the slab (once it finally gets here) to fit your counters, thus wasting material.
Quartz (See Silestone Above)
Laminate – YUK! Talk about VOC’s during the manufacture AND the installation.
